- Introduction This document describes the conditions under which the 11th Annual Albert B. Craig, Jr. Award is offered. Inquiries about the Award should be sent to: office@stauntonfarm.org
- Purpose of the Award Albert B. Craig, Jr., MD served as the President of the Staunton Farm Foundation until 1991. During his years on the Board of Trustees, he gave from a boundless reservoir of creativity, kindness, and generosity of spirit, challenging Trustees and staff to search for the best ideas to improve behavioral health in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Dr. Craig brought to the Foundation the same concern for people and love of inquiry that were apparent in his career as a Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Rochester Medical School. He led the Staunton Farm Foundation in its work to improve the lives of people with behavioral health issues by supporting programs of proven merit as well as those that test new approaches to advancing behavioral health. The purpose of the Albert B. Craig, Jr. Award is to recognize people who have challenged society to think in fresh ways about problems and solutions in behavioral health, to forge new paths, whether through uncommon partnerships or new ways of serving people with behavioral health issues, or who have invented a product or process that has alleviated mental illness/ addiction. Recipients of the Award need not reside in Southwestern Pennsylvania, but their contribution must have impacted this region.
- Application and selection process
The deadline for receipt of a nomination for the Award is April 30, 2019. Please submit nominations by email to: office@stauntonfarm.org. All nominations will receive an email confirming receipt of their application. An application consists of three parts:
A letter of Nomination, not to exceed three pages. In this letter, please:
- Identify the nominee and how you know about this individual’s qualifications
- Describe the nominee’s achievements and impact in the area of behavioral health
- Explain how the nominee’s work and approach are innovative
- Identify any actions this person has taken that are outside the usual scope of work and that benefit behavioral health
- A letter of support from a person other than the individual who submitted the nomination. This letter should address the nominee’s impact upon the community or the individual writing the letter. A one-page letter is sufficient
- Bio of the Nominee
- Eligibility and Selection Criteria Award is for individuals. Self-nominations are allowed. No Staunton Farm Foundation Board member or staff person may be an award recipient. The Board of the Staunton Farm Foundation has named a panel of individuals to select the recipient of the Award. The panel shall review each nominee using objective and nondiscriminatory criteria. The panel shall not discriminate based on race, creed, religion, ethnicity, or gender. The panel only considers the information presented to it in the applications. Nominators should ensure that the nomination statement includes all relevant information on the nominee’s suitability for the Award. The panel will use the following criteria to select the recipient:
- How the nominee shows innovation in improving mental health. This may be through improved processes, treatments, systems, or services.
- How the nominee’s work shows a positive impact on behavioral health.
- Whether the nominee reflects Dr. Craig’s values of concern for others, independent thought, and respect for results.
- Use of the Award There are no restrictions on the use of the Award by the recipient. The Foundation does not require any information from the nominee or from the recipient on the use of the Award. Any tax liabilities associated with the Award must be assessed and borne by the recipient.
